A Tribute to the Carter Family

When Mark Fain suggested that I do an acoustic “Gospel Tribute to The Carter Family” I was honored. First of all that he would think I’m good enough to sing these classics and then to have the privilege to record them at The Cash Cabin Studio, a place that has such a history in country music and a connection to the Carter family. A grandson of the Carter family, John Carter Cash, was on a fishing trip at the time of the recording, but his wife, a Carter “granddaughter-in-law,” Laura Cash, was so gracious and helpful to add her voice and her award winning fiddle to the mix.

The Whites, Sharon and Cheryl, who can claim a share in the resurgence of the popularity of bluegrass and Carter music (at least with my children) because of their role of singing “Keep On The Sunnyside” in the movie, O, Brother, Where Art Thou? also acted excited to be a part of this Carter Family project.

Louisa Hufstader wrote on a previous Carter CD: “Periodically, the songs of the original Carter Family are ‘rediscovered’ by popular culture. In 1972 Mother Maybelle recorded with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on their influential double LP ‘Will The Circle Be Unbroken.’ The family’s music and legend are central to Joel and Ethan Coen’s film, ‘O Brother, Where Art thou?’ which kindled a bluegrass and old-time music revival in 2001. As the 21st century unfolds, we can still count on the songs that cheered and comforted Americans during the darkest hours of the Depression…”

I hope you enjoy this Tribute to a classic family and to the Lord that they sing about. I thank God that He has given me an ability to sing and He gives us something to sing about. Martin Luther said, “There will be no singing in Hell.” And in Heaven, we’ll be singing 24/7 (except ‘time will be no more’ – but you get the point). God bless you!
